A hop skip and jump from Liverpool street station, Spitalfields Market is on the edge of the city in the heart of the East end. The market attracts 25,000 visitors every week and is open most days (see below). Expect to find all sorts of market stalls from young fashion designers to fruit and vegetables from around the world. There are all sorts of cafes and restaurants, and many shops around the outside of the market. There is easy wheelchair access.
The area was traditionally surrounded by silk weavers, and evidence of this can be seen on the buildings. The market was built originally as a fruit and vegetable market, but today it's reputation is of a place to find unusual bargains from artists and designers. It is renowned amongst Londoners as one of the trendiest spaces in town. Also very close to Brick Lane which is alive on Sunday,s with numerous bars, clubs, curry houses and exhibition spaces open all day. |
